I recently watched an interview online where a musician from Ghana said that he only made his music for his fellow Ghanaians. He was happy to see that he is gaining recognition across Africa but when he started to get calls to perform at venues in Europe and USA, he declined the offers stating that he would prefer to perform across Africa first and then maybe he would consider international stages. I found this particularly shocking because where I am from you take any show you can get, especially in these days of limited opportunities because of Covid 19. My dream has always been to perform at an international festival or be featured on international music charts. But after listening to him speak with the pride for his country and continent, it's made me wonder if I have been approaching my musical career all wrong. Am I selling out by wanting to be famous internationally?
